Most of the restaurants are not owned by the company, and that changes what you are buying
The overwhelming majority are run by franchisees, so the company's revenue is largely royalties on their sales plus rent on the sites. That makes the income far steadier than a restaurant operator's and far less exposed to food and labour cost inflation, because the franchisee absorbs those first. People who value this as a restaurant chain consistently reach the wrong conclusion about its margins.
It is also one of the larger property portfolios in the listed market
The company frequently owns or holds long leases on the land and buildings its franchisees operate from. A material part of the revenue above is therefore rent, which behaves like a property income stream rather than like a consumer one. That is why interest rates reach this share through a channel that has nothing to do with how many burgers are sold.
The revenue is global, so part of any move is the dollar
A large share of sales is earned outside the United States and reported in dollars. When the dollar moves, the reported figure moves with it even if nothing changed in any restaurant. If the chart above has drifted over the week with no company news, checking the dollar index over the same week usually explains more of it than anything else.
